Herb Brooks began his coaching career in 1969 as an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota while still playing hockey for Team USA. The first real success Herb Brooks had as a coach was in 1972 when he was named the head coach for the University of Minnesota. Just two years after being name head coach Herb lead his team, which was made up of completely “American grown” players to NCAA Division I national championship. Herb Brooks had also lead the team to two more national championships in 1976 and 1979. Herb’s record while coaching college was 175-100-20. Brooks didn’t recruit the best players or the players that had the best stats he recruited the players that he knew would go out and give it their all every night and the types of players that worked well with each other.
