Herb Brooks grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota.  The game of hockey has been a part of him throughout his entire life.  He played for the Johnson High School hockey team which won a state championship.  He has had success early in his young career.  After high school he went on to the University of Minnesota to play hockey for the gophers.  After he ended his years in college Brooks tried out for the 1960 Olympic Hockey Team.  He was cut a week before the games actually started, but this did not discourage him on obtaining his dreams.  During the 1960's Brooks went to play for U.S. National and Olympic teams. When the 1970's rolled around he went on to coach for his alma mater the University of Minnesota.  In 1980 he took the head coaching position for the U.S. Olympic team.  This particular olympic games would define his hockey career.  After the "Miracle on Ice", Brooks went on to coach for the National Hockey League (NHL).  Brooks coached another Olympic Hockey games with France and the United States. Herb Brooks died at the age of 66 in a car accident on August 11, 2003, near Forest Lake, Minnesota. Brooks had a wife Patti, and two children, Danny and Kelly.
