Game With the Soviets

The Olympic game with the soviets was the biggest hockey game, the world has ever seen. If you say the 1980 Olympics the first thing that comes to people mind is this game between the soviets and the USA. Does not matter if you were old enough to watch it at the time or if you were born 15 years later you have heard of the miracle on ice.

The reason this game was so amazing, was because the fact that the soviet team going in to the 1980 Olympics had never lost a game since the 1960 Olympic team. The USSR were know as the World’s best hockey team. The soviets proved how great they were by challenging the Best of the Best in the NHL. The Soviets won in decisive fashion.

Many people believe that the game they played was the best that hockey had ever seen. This game was close until the end. You could not ask for a more intense game, after the first period the score was 2-2. The period showed we could hang with them but if it was not for a late goal by Johnson that beat the buzzer, right before the time ran out; we would have had no momentum in the second period. The second period cut down our momentum with the goal by the USSR just 2:18 in the second period. We would end the second period down one and not looking so good going into the third period. Then in the third period came a thing of greatness, Johnson got his second goal of the game at 8:39 in the third, to make the game even at three each. After that goal The USSR pulled their goalie, Know as the best goalie in the world. Once herb saw that he told him players on the bench. "Boys,  you just made them pull the best Goalie in the world". This got the team fired up, it was not a great quote but what made it have such a great effect was that it was true. Shortly after that the US capitalized, with a goal from Mike Eruzione the caption of the team. The crowd was crazy the go ahead goal and only ten minutes left in the game. Those last ten minutes have been called the best played hockey that one could ever watch. As the clock hit one minute remaining everyone was counting down all the way till 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. "Do you believe in miracles" is the only thing you could hear the announcer say over the rioting crowd.
